Fashion Rules To Break: Overalls Can’t Be Stylish

The Series

Today is part 3 of a new series I started over on Instagram & TikTok where I pick 15 fashion rules to break. Rules can be a great thing and have their time and place, but when it comes to fashion most of them can be broken. That’s what makes filling up your closet and getting dressed so fun! And breaking them in your own way lets your personality shine through and helps you stand out from the crowd. But I do have one word of caution…

The Key

The key to breaking all the fashion rules is doing it with thought and intention. Just throwing pieces together willy nilly will often result in a loud mess and will definitely not leave you feeling at your best. So here’s my thought process behind how I broke the third rule – Overalls Can’t Be Stylish.

How To Style Overalls

A few keys for an elevated and effortless look:

– A tailored button down or patterned blouse in Winter and a simple ribbed racerback tank in Summer are all great options for layering underneath.

Be mindful of footwear! I am a big sneakers girl (see the post here) but since overalls are a very casual style by nature, I like to pair mine with an elevated shoe like an ankle boot, loafer, or slingback heel. If you do go with sneakers or high tops, elevate the look with jewelry.

– Steer clear of pairing them with flannel or traditional cowboy boots unless you’re going to a country music concert or a ranch vacation.

– Take the look into evening with heels, blazer or fun jacket, a clutch or crossbody bag, and statement jewelry.

– Try adding a belt for shape.
