Styling Tip: Balancing Hard and Soft Elements For Spring Outfits

The warm weather has finally rolled in and with it a swarm of soft pieces – think all things linen, ditsy floral dresses, ruffle tops, and soft tints of color like lavender and pale blue. A key styling tip for adding these pieces into everyday outfits is to balance the soft with harder elements like metal, structure or tailoring, and colors with depth. Here are a couple examples:

While the navy top does add a little hardness to the softness of the linen pants and shoe, layering in the structured blazer with antique gold hardware really takes this outfit up a notch. For the warmer days when a jacket is not needed, add stacked bracelets or a chunky gold necklace as in the next example…

Again, the navy tank does add a bit of hardness but the look on the left is starting to look a bit sloppy with predominately soft elements. Adding the chunky gold necklace and buckle loafers adds much needed balance and gives this look more depth and character.
